NCAA Preview: G-Town Hoyas @ Towson Tigers

WHO: Georgetown @ Towson

WHERE: Towson, MD

WHEN: Saturday February 22 12:00pm EST

GEORGETOWN

The Hoyas are coming off two season starting victories. Opening the season against Mount St. Mary’s, Georgetown won in a blowout of 10-4. Then, playing against Navy they had another win, but of a closer margin (9-8 OT).

In the nail-biting match against Navy, the Hoyas accumulated 38 total shots, 36 ground balls and won the majority of the face offs (12 of 20). They were successful in 18 of their 23 clears, and gained six man up opportunities.

Unfortunately, they also had 20 turnovers compared to Navy’s 11 and Towson’s 17 against Johns Hopkins.

Georgetown’s offensive momentum comes from Attackman Jeff Fountain (#6) and Peter Conley (#42), as well as midfielder Devon Lewis (#23). They each had 2 goals against Navy; Conley also had 2 assists.

In that same game, Hoyas Charles McCormick (#1) and Bo Stafford (#5) also put 2 and 1 shots in the cage, respectively.

The goalie and attackmen led the team in ground ball recoveries.

TOWSON

Against Johns Hopkins, Towson had 31 shots. However, Hopkins had 55. The Tigers saved 18 shots, recovered 26 ground balls, and were successful in 19 of 22 clears.

Midfielder Greg Cuccinello led the squad with 4 goals and Ryan Drenner in assists with 3. Attackmen Max Siskind and Joe Seider each scored goals; Seider also threw an assist. Mike Lowe (Defense) and Justin Mabus (midfield) each scored.

This shows that the Tigers are a well-rounded team. Each player knows how to create opportunities and players like Cuccinello and Drenner know when and where to be.

Towson is offense-heavy. Going into the matchup with Georgetown, Towson should plan to continue their offensive pressures, and as long as the defense steps up a bit more they should fare rather well.

PREDICTION

Both teams are offense heavy and enjoy holding the ball down at the scoring end. This game should be a fantastic demonstration of Georgetown’s defense that has yet to be truly tested under consistently relentless pressure. Towson’s defensive group will have an opportunity to collect themselves and hustle back onto the field with fortitude.

In return for so much defense, both offenses should be prepared to step up the pressure even more and take shots at each opportunity, no matter how small.
