NCAA: Syracuse Looks to Overcome Hobart

Syracuse takes on heated rival Hobart tonight in the Carrier Dome at 7pm. Last season, the Statesman almost pulled out the upset against the Orange, but fell short in their 13-12 loss.

In 2006, Hobart took home a 9-8 win over John Desko’s squad, making it the first time they had won in the 2000 era. Syracuse has taken down the Statesmen every year since then, giving them an overall record of 12-1.

Now ranked fifth in the polls, Syracuse is on a four game winning streak with most recent wins over Cornell and Big East for Rutgers by one goal margins. Since their season opening loss against Albany, the Orange have only one other loss to Big East competitor Villanova and now stand at 9-2 on the season.

Senior midfielder Jojo Morasco leads the Orange with 13 goals and 27 assists. Kevin Rice, Luke Cometti, Derek Maltz follow with a combined 79 points (53G, 26A). Brian Megill will be the biggest threat to the Statesman offense after he shut down Rob Pannell in the second half of the Cuse vs. Cornell game. Dom Lamolinara played well against Cornell once he got his mind together and started making saves.

Hobart (5-6) is coming off a huge win over ECAC opponent Bellarmine in a 9-8 battle. It was the teams first win in over a month when they defeated Canisius 12-8 on March 12. Coach johnson’s squad went on a four game skid losing to Robert Morris, Fairfield, Denver and Ohio State. They needed the win against Bellarmine to put the team in the right mind to take on the surging Orange.

Junior attackers Alex Love, Cam Stone and Jake McHenry head Hobart in points. McHenry has tallied 16 goals and 2 assists. Love has recorded 43 points (36G, 7A), with Stone on his heels with 41 (15G, 26A). Goaltender, Peter Zonino, another Junior, out of Wayne, PA has made 129 saves giving himself a .510 save percentage. Zonino started out rough but has found a rhythm in his play.

This is the fourteenth meeting between the Orange and Statesman since 2000. Cuse is rising above the preseason chatter, taking each game one at a time. With their win over Bellarmine, Hobart will come into the game hungry and will fight til the end to take one away from the Orange.
