NCAA Weekend Wrap: Albany Explodes, Dartmouth Upsets

It was another exciting weekend of college lacrosse in the division 1 end of the NCAA.  Upsets, beatdowns, entertaining close games all packed into two days as we are heading into the homestretch of March.  Here were some of the highlights:

 

  • Georgetown 10, #9 Marquette 9

The Hoyas had an 8-2 lead at halftime before the Golden Eagles stormed back to tie it up.  Freshman Craig Berge had a 6-4 extra man goal with 3:45 left in the game to give Marquette loss number 1 on the year.

 

  • UMass 9, Hofstra 7

Brendan Hegarty had a hat trick for the Minutemen and Nick Mariano (2G, 1A) had a three-point day as UMass got their first CAA win of the season.

 

  • #11 Albany 24, Hartford 6

The Great Danes led the Hawks 14-3 at half, thanks to explosive performances by the starting attack of freshman Connor Fields (5G, 2A), sophomore Seth Oakes (4G, 2A), and senior Lyle Thompson (3G, 1A).

 

  • #19 Army 7, Lehigh 5

The Black Knights got another important Patriot League victory in the highly competitive league thanks to two point days by Cole Johnson (2G), Connor Cook, and John Glesener (1G, 1A each), while also stopping Canadian Dan Taylor to only a goal.

 

  • Drexel 9, Michigan 7

The Dragons pulled an impressive victory over the Wolverines at the Big House thanks to hat tricks by Cole Shafer and Ryan Belka, who had the go-ahead transition goal late in the 4th quarter and an empty net goal as well.

 

  • Holy Cross 13, St. John’s 11

The Crusaders escaped the Red Storm with four point performances from Kevin Lux and Terry McKenna (3G, 1A each).

 

  • Dartmouth 12, #16 Harvard 11 (2OT)

Freshman Jack Korzelius gave the Big Green an upset victory over the Crimson after failing to pull ahead in the 4th quarter.  Deke Burns had 2 goals while Devin Dwyer had a goal and an assist for Harvard.

 

  • #13 Princeton 11, #10 Yale 10

LSM Sammy Gravitte had a game-high 7 ground balls for Princeton, while Mike MacDonald (2G, 4A) and Kip Orban (4G) had big days for the Tigers.  Conrad Oberbeck (3G, 4A) led the game in total points scored.

 

  • #6 Denver 10, Penn State 8

Connor Cannizzaro had 4 goals has the Pioneers came back to defeat the Nittany Lions on the campus of Hofstra University.

 

  • #7 Cornell 10, Penn 9 (3OT)

The Big Red went 39:41 without a goal and squandered a six-goal 2nd quarter lead to the Quakers before Dan Lintner won it for Cornell.

 

  • Boston 11, Bucknell 9

The Terriers erased a 4th quarter Bison lead to take a very important Patriot League win home at Nickerson Field.  Cal Derth (2G, 3A) and Adam Schaal (3G, 1A) contributed for Boston.

 

  • #3 Notre Dame 9, #15 Ohio State

The Fighting Irish, sporting brand new and flashy golden helmets, spanked the Buckeyes and got their first shutout since 1984.  They host #1 Syracuse on Saturday.

 

  • Fairfield 11, #17 Villanova 4

The Wildcats did not register a goal in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, while Stag TJ Neubauer had 4 goals for Fairfield.

 

  • #8 Virginia 16, #20 Johns Hopkins 15 (OT)

If you had the chance to watch this game, this was a great one to watch, compared to the shutout earlier in the day on TV with Notre Dame.  Greg Coholan got 2 goals and 2 assists, including the game winner in OT.

 

  • #5 Maryland 10, #2 North Carolina 2

Maryland looks very legit with their strong defense and offense.  Joe LoCascio had a career-high 5 goals and Kyle Bernlohr had 11 saves.  Jimmy Bitter and Joey Sankey each had a goal and four assists.

 

  • #1 Syracuse 19, #4 Duke 7

Major Cuse whooping in the Carrier Dome as the Orange dominated the game from start to finish.  Myles Jones was only held to one assist, Ben Williams dominated yet again at the face-off x, and the offense, without Randy Staats (replaced by Tim Barber), thrived yet again.
