Smith Blog: The National Championships

This year, Ontario has the honour of hosting both the Peewee and Midget Lacrosse Championships of Canada. This is a week-long event where each Province sends a team made up of the best players and coaches from the Province. This should be the most exciting lacrosse of the year and looks like it is going to be a great week.

For an event like this there is a special referee crew selected. This year there are 12 referees working the Nationals. There are 6 from Ontario, 2 from Alberta, and 1 each from British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Quebec.  There are 8 – 10 games per day in each division, which makes for a lot of lacrosse for the 12 referees. Just like the teams participating in the tournament, the referees are competing against each other to see who will get to work the gold medal games.

This year I am part of the Nationals crew. This is my first time at an event of this stature and am extremely excited to get out on the floor. I am extremely proud to represent Ontario at a National Championship and am going to set my goal on the gold medal games. The National Championships of Canada will be an exciting and wild week of lacrosse in Whitby, Ontario.
