Stories of the Week: NLL Results Highlight Week

Wings Road Woes

The Philadelphia Wings lost this week in Rochester after suffering losses to Minnesota and Colorado on the road last week. They finally get a chance back at home today where they face the Swarm again, who by the way scored 21 goals against Buffalo last night.

Ironmen Clinch

The final Canadian Lacrosse League playoff spot was going to go to either the Iroquois Ironmen or the Barrie Blizzard. With wins over Durham and Brampton this weekend, they clinched that final seed to qualify for the playoffs for the second season in a row.

Three Way Western Tie

Last night the Washington Stealth defeated the Calgary Roughnecks 12-11 to clinch a playoff seed. At 8-6, Washington and Calgary are tied for the top seed in the west along with the Edmonton Rush, 5-1 in their last six games. Next week all three teams play eastern teams battling for position.

Bandits Lose Six Straight

The Buffalo Bandits are 5-9 and are in disarray. They have lost six in a row and lost in Minnesota last night 21-7. They haven’t suffered many injuries and haven’t lost too many players overall, so why are they struggling so badly? Who knows right now, but if the season ended today, the Bandits are not a playoff club.

Albany Defeats Hopkins

The Albany Great Danes are for real. The 20th ranked team in the country is 7-2 on the season after they defeated the now 6-4 Johns Hopkins Blue Jays in Baltimore on Friday night. Does this game say more about the Jays or the Danes? Hopkins is a likely tournament team still, but this was a statement game for Albany to prove their worth in this league.

Pat McCready Retires

We saw this coming when he wasn’t on the Rochester roster to start the season, but on Friday former NLL defensive player of the year Pat McCready officially retired from the game. The 17 year veteran retired on top after winning a champions cup with the Knighthawks in 2012.

Rock Officially Move to Oakville

News we have known about for a few weeks became official on Tuesday when the Ajax Rock announced they will be moving to Oakville. The Rock have been mired in oblivion in Major Series Lacrosse for years, and Toronto Rock GM and assistant coach Terry Sanderson will be the general manager of this team.

Rush Streak Snapped

The Edmonton Rush set out on a five game road trip well over a month ago and they swept the trip. Last night they returned home to Rexell Place and lost to the Colorado Mammoth. The Rush are still tied for first place in the west at 8-6, but the mystery of NLL home teams losing is still there.

Virginia Loses Five Straight

The Virginia Cavaliers have not had a good go of it lately. They sit at 5-6 and in last place in the ACC, all due to their five straight losses. These losses come to Cornell, Ohio State, Hopkins, Maryland and yesterday, North Carolina. Their last two games are at Duke and against the surging Bellarmine Knights.
