WLA Weekend Recap: Shamrocks dominate Timbermen

It was a quiet in the WLA last weekend with just one game on the schedule. The Victoria Shamrocks took on the Nanaimo Timbermen. These two teams sit on polar opposite ends of the WLA spectrum as the Shamrocks sit in first place while the Timbermen sit in last. In the first meeting between these two teams this summer the Shamrocks narrowly edged by the Timbermen with a 9-8 win.

The Shamrocks took the early lead in this game as Derek Lowe scored to give the Shamrocks a 1-0 lead. Nanaimo would take the lead as Cayle Ratcliffe and Blake Kenny combined for consecutive goals to take a 2-1 lead. Victoria would come back strong though as  Jeff Shattler would score a pair of goals along with Mitch Jones to give Victoria a 4-2 lead. The two teams would continue to trade goals back and forth to end the first period. At the end of the first period the Shamrocks led 6-4.

In the second period the Shamrocks would extend their lead as Cory Conway and Rhys Duch scored to extend their lead to 8-4. Nanaimo though would not back down as they would score four goals to end the second period and tie the game at 8-8. In the third period the Shamrocks took complete control of this game as they scored seven goals to take a commanding 15-8 lead. The Timbermen would get one lat goal but the Shamrocks would hold on for the 15-9 win.

The Shamrocks were able to win this game as they peppered Zach Boychuk with 58 shots and were eventually able to break him in the third period as he allowed seven goals in the third period that allowed Victoria to take control of the game. Jeff Shattler and Corey Small were the stars of this game as they each had six points on the night. Victoria with the win took a four point lead on the second place Maple Ridge Burrards.
