Exclusive: Casey Powell Voices Frustration With MLL

On Thursday night, recently retired Casey Powell joined the LaxWorm Radio Show on The Lacrosse Radio Network to discuss his recent retirement.

During the interview, (which begins at the 50:00 mark of the show) Powell expresses several frustrations with the league he retired from.

“I still feel like I’m playing at a high level.” he began saying. “I love playing the game, but there something that seems to be missing when I play MLL in terms of I don’t have much fun doing it anymore. I love playing in tournaments like Lake Placid. The players aren’t obviously as good but it’s a better style of lacrosse. MLL’s a big commitment, every weekend of the summer and its very little pay.”

Powell went on to say about the league, “It goes against the grain of what lacrosse is about and the spirit of it. I’m not saying that there shouldn’t be a professional league and of course it has to be a business in order to run but lacrosse to me is all about honoring the players and the coaches and the fans. Being a part of the MLL you feel like more of a commodity and not really respected. You can’t really call the shots. They tell you what to do and how to do it. For me being one who’s always been a free spirit and likes to go up and just play the game and enjoy it, I don’t know.”

One of the frustrations of Powell appears to be his being suspended by the league for 2012 and some of 2013, which he voices.

“I was suspended for playing in Lake Placid for the remainder of the season and into next season so I think the writing was on the wall that the MLL probably isn’t the best thing for me.
“I kind of feel like I haven’t always been treated great by the league throughout my career Some of the things they’ve pulled behind the scenes, to be suspended for playing the game I love for a weekend in Lake Placid with all my Syracuse buddies when the Canadians are playing four games a week up in Canada.”
Powell went on to say he still wanted to play box lacrosse, and he might end up back in the NLL. “I may play in the National Lacrosse League and I hope to try out for the US National team for one more run.”
