Ivy League: Harvard Starts with Momentum, UPenn Stole It Away

During playoffs for any sport, it is well-documented that anything can happen. In the past, we have seen sub-par teams defeat top-seeded ones for national championships. In the Ivy League women’s lacrosse championship, this could not have been less true.

As most people expected and predicted, the final for this conference featured Princeton and Penn, the two best teams in the league. Penn came into the game with a 12-4 record, while Princeton was not far behind at 11-6. Within the Ivy League conference, the two teams shared an identical record of 6-1, proving how valuable each team was during the regular season.

The game was full of up and downs, as the Quakers jumped out to an early 6-0 lead. Princeton; however, would not be discouraged. At the beginning of the second half they were still down 6-2, but would begin to close the gap, scoring three goals to Penn’s one. Despite their efforts; however, this would not be enough to crawl out of the early hole they dug themselves. Princeton went on to lose to Penn 9-6.

Though certainly excited about their win, there is an even bigger tournament on the horizon for the Quakers. Their Ivy League win guaranteed them a spot in the NCAA tournament, where they will face Canisius, who finished the regular season at 10-6. While this will be no easy feat, if the Quakers advance, they will have to face  No. 1 Maryland, who embarrassed them earlier in the season, handing Penn a 15-5 loss.
