LIVE BLOG: CAA Title Game, Hofstra vs. Drexel

Tonight at James M. Shuart stadium, the first-seed Hofstra takes on second-seed Drexel University in the Colonial Athletic Association title game.

 

Hofstra Starters:

A: 17-Varn, 2-Yapor, 5-Llinares

M: 7-Malave, 12-Coholan, 21-Hendrickson

D: 23-Caputo, 34-Satterthwaite, 44-Sullivan

Drexel Starters:

A: 1-Boudreau, 15-Shafer, 22-Trizano

M: 5-Raucci, 9-McIntosh, 13-Belka

D: 11-Dusek, 33-Houchins, 35-Thomas

GK: 8-Gabrielsen

 

First Quarter:

HU GOAL: 1-0 Hofstra’s Torin Varn opens up scoring off of a pass from Mike Malave at the 8:55 mark of the first quarter.

DU GOAL: 1-1 Cole Shafer ties it up for the Dragons with his 31st of the season from Ben McIntosh at 10:31.

DU GOAL: 1-2 Drexel takes its first lead of the game with a breakaway from Nick Trizano.

HU GOAL: 2-2 Korey Hendrickson passes it quick to Lance Yapor who was in front of the net to get the Pride even again at 13:54.

HU PENALTY: Chris Selva gets caught cross-checking as the buzzer sounds, Drexel will start on the EMO.

END OF FIRST QUARTER: Both teams are tied 2-2.

 

Second Quarter:

DU GOAL: 2-3 Drexel breaks the tie with Shafer’s second goal of the game assisted by McIntosh at 4:34.

HU GOAL: 3-3 Drew Coholan finishes Torin Varn’s pass for his 22nd of the season.

DU GOAL: 3-4 Drexel scores on the man-up with Trizano’s second of the game.

END OF FIRST HALF: Hofstra trails Drexel 4-3.

Drexel leads in ground balls picking up 13 to Hofstra’s 11.  Hofstra has caused five turnovers while Drexel has none.  The Dragons outshot the Pride 17-16.  Hofstra’s Kris Clarke leads in face-offs after winning five of eight.

 

Third Quarter:

DU GOAL: 3-5 Shafer scoops it up and shoots it over his shoulder to complete his hat trick.

HU GOAL: 4-5 Malave cuts the deficit to one at the 4:01 mark of the third.

HU GOAL: 5-5 Sam Llinares finds the back of the net from an awkward angle to tie it up.

HU GOAL: 6-5 Varn puts the Pride back on top with his second of the game assisted by Yapor on the the man-up.

HU GOAL: 7-5 Nick Altmann found Varn in front of the net for his third of the game.

HU GOAL: 8-5 Varn gets his fourth of the game off of a pass from Coholan at 12:12 of the third.

END OF THE THIRD QUARTER: Hofstra goes on a five-goal run to lead the Dragons 8-5.

 

Fourth Quarter:

DU GOAL: 8-6 Ryan Belka scores his 22nd of the season unassisted 47 seconds into the fourth quarter.

DU GOAL: 8-7 CAA Player of the Year McIntosh shows why he has earned his title with his 43rd of the season assisted by Belka at 7:23.

HU GOAL: 9-7 Yapor cuts from behind the cage for his second of the game at 8:26.

HU GOAL: 10-7 Malave gets his second of the game unassisted at 9:59.

DU GOAL: 10-8 Shafer gets his fourth of the game from McIntosh at 10:23.

DU GOAL: 10-9 Trizano completes his hat trick to cut the Pride lead to one.

DU GOAL: 10-10 Belka ties it up for the Dragons at 12:15.

END OF REGULATION: Hofstra and Drexel are tied 10-10.

 

Overtime:

Both Hofstra and Drexel aren’t able to captialize.  Second Overtime is about to be underway.

 

Second Overtime:

Once again both teams are unable to capitalize.  Teams are still tied 10-10 at the end of the 2OT.

 

Third Overtime:

Drexel wins its first CAA Tournament with Cole Shafer’s fifth and game-winning goal 11-10.
