Major League Lacrosse All Stars: Old School Analysis

Stephen Berger-M-Hounds-2004

In his eighth year in the MLL, Stephen has been selected for his sixth All-Star Game. Berger is a 3x All-American from Washington College and is currently sitting 5th in the MLL for points this season. With 16 goals, (1) 2-pointer and 8 assists so far, he is a huge asset for the Charlotte Hounds.

Greg Bice-D-Machine-2004

Also in his eighth year in the league, this is Bice’s third MLL All-Star appearance. Bice was acquired by the Machine before the start of the season from the Rochester Rattlers. Out of The Ohio State University, is really making a name for himself amongst the great defenders of the MLL. So far through the 2012 season, Greg has 1 assist and 15 groundballs.

Kevin Buchanan-A-Cannons-2008

Kevin has been a very important part of the Cannon’s offense since being drafted out of Ohio State in 2008. Kevin is currently tied for 13th on the MLL points leaderboard with 21 points off 16 goals and 4 assists. This is Kevin’s second MLL All-Star game, with the first being in 2010 when he was the MLL Freestyle Skills Competition.

Steven Brooks-M-Bayhawks-2008

When Steven was in college playing for Syracuse, he was a 1st team All-American and won the McLaughlin award for being the nation’s best midfielder. This is his first All-Star game, although I see many more coming from such a great player. Brooks is currently tied for 8th on the MLL leaderboard with 24 points off 17 goals, (1) 2-pointer and 5 assists.

Kyle Dixon-M-Bayhawks-2006

Much like Steven Brooks, Kyle Dixon was also a 1st team All-American in college and won the McLaughlin Award at Virginia. This is Kyle’s third MLL All-Star game and his first since 2008. Kyle is tied for 2nd on the MLL leaderboard with 13 goals, (5) 2-pointers and 8 assists.

Chris Eck-F/O-Cannons-2008

Eck has been one of the MLL’s top faceoff guys since coming into the league in 2008. He led the MLL in faceoff percentage in 2011 and was second in 2009. This will be Eck’s second MLL All-Star game and his first since 2010. Out of Colgate, Chris ranks 3rd all-time in Division 1 history for faceoff wins with 658 and a .609 winning percentage.

Kyle Hartzell-D-Machine-2008

Hartzell is one of the most decorated long poles in MLL history. In 2010 he became the first defenseman to win the MLL Championship MVP when the Bayhawks won the title. In 2011 he was an MLL All-Star and was the 2011 MLL Fastest Shot Champion. Hartzell was a D-III 1st Team All-American at Salisbury University .

Brian Langtry-A-Long Island-2001

Despite being drafted in the inaugural 2001 MLL draft out of Hofstra, Langtry is entering just his sixth MLL season. This will also be his third MLL All-Star game and his first since 2009. He’s tied with Steven Brooks for 8th on the MLL leaderboard with 16 goals and 8 assists.

Brendan Mundorf-A-Outlaws-2006

This is Mundorf’s 7th MLL season and his 5 All-Star selection, so it’s easy to see that he’s been a force since entering the league. Brendan is tied with Kyle Dixon for 2nd on the MLL leaderboard with 31 points on 17 goals and 14 assists. Out of UMBC where he was an Honorable Mention All-American, Mundorf has also played in 2 World Lacrosse Championships.

Nicky Polanco-D-Bayhawks-2002

Since being drafted in 2002 out of Hofstra, Nicky has been synonymous with great defense in the MLL. At Hofstra, he was named the NCAA Player of the Year and was a 1st Team All-American. Polanco is a 2-time MLL Defender of the Year and hopes to earn several more. Nicky was just acquired by the Bayhawks during this season from a trade with the Long Island Lizards.

Casey Powell-M-Nationals-2001

Powell is the MLL All-time leader in points and is one of the best lacrosse players to ever play the game. He is a 2-time MLL Champion and this will be his fifth MLL All-Star game. Casey is one of the most decorated MLL players, having won the 2 championships, multiple scoring awards and has been named the MLL Offensive Player of the Year.

Brett Queener-G-Nationals-2008

Queener is one of the most exciting goalies and biggest personalities in the MLL. He ranks 5th on Albany’s leaderboard for saves in a career with 467. He was won 2 MLL Championships, one with the Rattlers and one with the Nationals. Brett is currently 7th among MLL goalies with a .516 save percentage.

Paul Rabil-M-Cannons-2008

One of the sport’s biggest role models, Rabil is one of the most exciting players in the world. He was a three-time All-American at Johns Hopkins and a finalist for the Tewaarton Award his senior year. Rabil has won 2 MLL MVP awards and this will be his 5th MLL All-Star game. Paul is currently the MLL points leader with 46 points on 17 goals, (2) 2-pointers and 25 assists.

Jesse Schwartzman-G-Denver-2007

This is Schwartzman’s 6th year in the league and his 4th MLL All-Star selction. In 2009, Jesse was named the Warrior Goalie of the Year. As a sophomore at Johns Hopkins, Schwartzman was named the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA tournament. He is currently ranked 6th among MLL goalies with a .530 save percentage.

Brian Spallina-D-Bayhawks-2001

Spallina is a 4-time MLL champion; 2 with the Lizards and 2 with the Philadelphia Barrage. This will be Brian’s third MLL All-Star game since being drafted out of Hofstra in 2001. He is known for being a very aggressive and tough defenseman.

Matt Striebel –M-Rattlers-2001

Striebel has won 3 MLL Championships with the Barrage and this will be his 5th MLL All-Star game. At Princeton, Matt was a 2-time Honorable Mention All-American and 2-time NCAA champion. Matt is currently tied for 34th on the MLL leaderboard with 13 points on 7 goals, (2) 2-pointers and 2 assists.

Joe Walters-M-Nationals-2006

This will be Walters’ 5th MLL All-Star game in just his 6th MLL season. Walters’ is the Maryland Terrapins all-time leader in points and goals, and was a 1st Team All-American while playing in College Park. Joe is currently tied for 13th on the MLL leaderboard with 11 goals and 10 assists.

Drew Westervelt-A-Bayhawks-2007

Drew was drafted in 2007 out of UMBC where he was a 2-time All-America East selection. He was been a scoring machine since entering the MLL in 2007. Westervelt is currently 11th in the league for points with 14 goals and 9 assists.

Chazz Woodson-A-Machine-2005

Woodson is one of the most exciting players in the game to watch. He’s made the Sports Center Top 10 plays multiple times this season and is repeatedly on the MLL plays of the week. This is Woodson’s 7th MLL season and his first with the Machine. Woodson has played in the MLL All-Star game before and is currently tied for 18th in the MLL with 16 goals and 4 assists.

Lee Zink-D-Outlaws-2004

Zink was drafted by the Bayhawks in 2004 out of the University of Maryland where he was a 1st Team All-American his senior year. Lee is an MLL champion and multiple time All-Star. In 2010, Zink was named to the MLL 10-Year Anniversary Team.
