MLL Stories to Watch: Week One

NLL Players

Almost every team in the MLL has starting players in the NLL. Boston has Paul Rabil, Kyle Sweeney and a few others. New York is waiting for Matt Gibson, CJ Costabile, Mark Matthews and Max Seibald. For Rochester it’s Joel White and Ned Crotty. Chesapeake is anxious to get Westervelt, Reynolds, Grant Jr, and Powell (still a mystery if paying in MLL). Denver saw Mundorf out during Championship Weekend with an injured ankle and will miss the start to the season with Philly teammate Steve Holmes, and fellow Outlaw Zack Greer. Charlottes only miss will be Geoff Snider at the face-off X. Ohio loses Kiel Matisz and long pole Kyle Hartzell for the start. he team that hurts the most out of the two leagues’ seasons overlapping is Hamilton. They will be without Brodie Merrill, Kevin Crowley, Joe Walters, Cody Jamieson, Stephen Keogh, Jordan McBride, Joe Resetarits, Rhys Duch, Garrett Billings, Jordan Hall, Kyle Rubisch, Jeremy Thompson and Sid Smith

Old Dog Teaching Old Tricks

Biggest surprise out of the Supplemental Draft was when Rochester picked up Mark Millon. He was drafted in 2004 and played for then Baltimore Bayhawks and tallied 58 points playing in all 12 games. Millon was in the MLL from 2004-2007 and played for the Bayhawks (2004, 2006, 2007), Cannons (2005) and Lizards (traded to in 2007). Mark has a career total of 41 games under his belt, 108 goals, three two-point goals and 54 assists, totaling 165 points overall. With his veteran presence on the field, the Rattlers may learn a thing or two and become that much more of a threat offensively.

Chesapeake also went with the surprise pick and drafted casey Powell, who announced his retirement from the MLL in August. Coach Cottle has been trying tirelessly to recruit Casey and give his team that much more depth on the offensive side of the field. Powell would bring a lot of fire power to the Bayhawks as Danny Glading picked the 2012 season to be his last in the MLL and retired.

Key Season Starting Misses & Injuries

Adam Ghitelman will be out for the start of the season for the Hounds with a concussion. Max Seibald is slated to return to the Lizards after he broke his foot in early January. Kip Turner out with his commitment to Brown. Josh Sims will sit out with an injured hamstring. Chris LaPierre will possibly stay another season at UVa after suffering a season ending injury and not join the Hamilton Nationals if granted the extra year.

Ins & Outs

Peet Poillon, one of Denver’s most talented midfielders, will be sporting the blue and gold this summer for the Charlotte Hounds. He is accompanied by former Lizards Ryan Young and Collin Briggs, in a trade that sent Stephen Berger back up North to New York. The Machine got a big boost on defense when they picked up goaltender Scott Rodgers. New York traded Will Mangan and their 29th pick in the 2013 Collegiate Draft to Denver for their top attackman Mark Matthews. The Hounds gave Durkins rights to Hamilton who need a lot of help on defense in return for Tripuka, Haus and Carroll. Charlotte also lost Boltus and Bitter to trades as well. Speaking of Bitter, he will not be playing in the MLL this season which leaves a spot open for anyone on the Rattlers sideline to step up and show their skills. Danny Glading and John Orsen are gone by retirement, but the Hawks picked up Dan Burns to replace Orsen in the d-middie slot. Jack Reid will be modeling the new Lizards look this season. Both Lao-Gosney’s will battle for Hamilton this year in what will help the Nationals in a depleted offense to the start of the season.
