MSL Players of the Week: Steenhuis, Evans and Williams Lead the Way

Mark Steenhuis continued to strengthen his lead in the Major Series Lacrosse (MSL) scoring race, as the Peterborough Lakers (9-7) standout finished Week 8 with 14 points (9G, 5A) to add to his league-leading 76 points (40G, 36A) in 16 games.

Steenhuis’ most notable showing of the week came in a lopsided 16-7 win over the Brampton Excelsiors (4-11), as the righty notched nine-points (6G, 3A).

After scoring a hat-trick versus Brampton, Scott Evans put up another three-goal performance while adding one assist in a 12-9 victory over the first place Brooklin Redmen (11-3). Evans maintained his hot streak in a loss to Kitchener-Waterloo (7-8), notching three points (2G, 1A) versus the Kodiaks.

Brooklin did battle just once during Week 8, as Shawn Williams (1G, 5A), Kiel Matisz (3G, 2A), and Shayne Jackson (5A) all were impressive in a loss to the Lakers. Despite a winless week for the Redmen, Jackson joins Steenhuis becoming just the second MSL scorer to surpass the 50-point mark (20G, 31A, 51PTS) while Williams currently leads the league in assists with 39.

Steve Fryer picked up his third win since joining Kitchener-Waterloo, posting 35 saves in an 11-8 win over Peterborough. Ryan Benesch helped lead the Kodiaks in a pair of wins versus Peterborough and Brampton, racking up five points in both K-W victories.

Rob Hellyer had a five-point (3G, 2A) outing in the Oakville Rock’s defeat of K-W while adding four helpers in a victory over Brampton, as the Rock (6-8) ride a three-game winning streak into a Monday, July 21 matchup with Brooklin.
