NCAA GameDay: Cornell, Virginia in Action

Drexel (1-1) vs. Villanova (0-1)  Noon – The Wildcats head to Drexel today to take on the Dragons today. Drexel is coming off a huge upset 20-19 win over Albany, after the Great Danes downed the mighty Orange from Syracuse in OT. Villanova was handed a loss in their season home opener by Lehigh. Fans will be in for a close game.

Wagner (0-2) vs. Lafayette (1-2) 2pm – After starting off the season beating Georgetown 11-10, Lafayette has dropped two in a row, one to Stony Brook 12-10 and the other to Manhattan 11-7. Wagner is 0-2 so far losing to both Providence and Rutgers, but may be able to rebound against the Leopards and get their first win of the 2013 season.

Dartmouth (0-1) vs. Vermont (0-2) 3pm – The Big Green’s only loss comes at the hands of Colgate in a close 13-10 game in favor of the Raiders. Vermont hasn’t had much luck so far, losing to Colgate 13-7 and then Providence 13-5. If numbers mean anything, I’d put my money on Dartmouth to come out victorious in this matchup.

Saint John’s (2-0) vs. Stony Brook (1-2) 3pm – The Seawolves will travel down 495 today to take on the Red Storm, in a city versus the island matchup. Saint John’s has beaten Holy Cross, 11-9, and Yale, 10-9. Stony Brook dropped games to Marist and Virginia, while picking up a win over Lafayette and will seek revenge for last years 11-9 loss to Saint John’s.

#7 Cornell (1-0) vs. Binghamton (0-1) 4pm – If their game against Hobart is any indication about how the season is going to go, Cornell should make quick work of the Bearcats in this game. Rob Pannell had 9 points (4G, 5A) by himself in their 19-11 victory over Hobart, with Steve Mock and Connor Buczek each picking up 5 points themselves. Max Schefler and his defense will be busy and shutting down Pannell will be their biggest test of the afternoon.

#15 Fairfield (2-1) vs. #20 Hofstra (1-1) 4pm – Fairfield has put up a fight in each of their three games, keeping them close with only a one or two goal differential. They host Hofstra after dropping a 10-9 decision to the Tar Heels the other day. The Pride are also entering the game off a 10-7 loss to Princeton. This will be a fight to the finish as both teams are looking to get back on the winning track.

Harvard (0-1) vs. Holy Cross (1-1) 4pm – The Crimson only lost to UMass by a final score of 8-6, which shows that they can compete. Holy Cross has both won and loss by the final score of 11-9 in their two games. Coach Morrissey’s Crusaders fell to Harvard in 2012 14-9, and will use the momentum they have after their win over Hartford to feed themselves heading into the game today.

UPenn (1-0) vs. Saint Joseph’s (2-1) 4pm – Big upset on Friday as UPenn took down the doughty Blue Devils 14-9. Senior attackman Tim Schwalje had three goals and five assists, with net minder Brian Feeney posting 15 saves and a .625 save percentage. The Hawks are on a role, winning two in a row against High Point and VMI. Can Saint Joseph’s figure out UPenn’s goalie or will the Quakers have some Hawk for dinner?

#2 Loyola (2-1) vs. UMBC (1-1) 7pm – UMBC heads to inner state competitor Loyola today in what will either be  blow out or a very tight game. The Retrievers thumped Rutgers on Saturday with an 11-7 win in their first home game of the season. Loyola fought hard against Maryland in a national championship rematch, but fell just short, losing 12-10. Toomey’s Greyhounds are itching to get back into the win column. This matchup will be a big dog fight.

#6 Virginia (3-0) vs. Mount Saint Mary’s (2-1) 7pm – Steele Stanwick may be missed, but it hasn’t shown in the Cavaliers play, as they are 3-0 this season and averaging about 15 goals a game. Dan Marino has stepped in cage nicely for Rob Fortunato, keeping the Virginia defense as sound as possible. The Mount were dominated by the Terps in their season opener, but bounced back quickly, upsetting both Bucknell and Delaware in their last two games. Virginia should tread softly against Mount Saint Mary’s, one slip up could be the difference.
