NCAA Preview: Hofstra Takes On St. John’s

Number 17 Hofstra will put its Colonial Athletic Association schedule on hold for a non-conference matchup against the St. John’s Red Storm this Tuesday in Queens, New York.

Taking a look at the numbers for both teams so far this season, Hofstra (4-2, 1-0 CAA) has a 9.07 gpg average while St. John’s (3-3, 1-0 BIG EAST) has scored 11.54 gpg and is ranked 23rd in the nation in scoring offense.

Hofstra is coming off of an 11-9 win over conference foe the Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens and look to continue a four-game winning streak on the road for just the second away game this season.

Senior co-captain attackman Torin Varn scored a season-high three goals while fellow seniors Lance Yapor and Drew Coholan chipped in two goals and an assist. Hofstra’s Kris Clarke had an impressive day at the faceoff X winning 12-23 against Delaware’s Tyler Barbarich (10-23), a FOGO who entered the match having won 70 percent of his battles.

The Red Storm is led by seniors Kevin Cernuto (14 G, 6 A), Colin Keegan (13 G, 4 A), Kieran McArdle (13 G, 17 A) and Ryan Fitzgerald (10 G, 5 A). After a bounce-back 15-7 win against the Georgetown Hoyas, the Red Storm saw a lot of offensive power with seven different players tacking on goals in the victory.

The last time Hofstra and St. John’s met last season, the Pride saw their four-game winning streak snapped as the Red Storm defeated them 7-6 with a late goal from Cernuto, his third of the game. The Pride outshot St. John’s 41-34 but the Red Storm won the ground ball battle 27-22.

Hofstra goalie Chris Selva made 10 saves while Red Storm senior goalie Jeff Lowman made 19 saves. While the Pride have Selva (8.58 GAA, .490 save percentage), a junior in net, the Red Storm have used freshman Joseph Danaher for six games (11.19 GAA, .487 save percentage).

The teams are set to face-off at 3 pm in Jamaica Queens, NY on Tuesday.
