NCAA: Terps Face UMBC

Today at 5 p.m. the No. 1 Maryland Terrapins (4-0) will come home after a three game road trip to take on the struggling UMBC Retriever (1-3). The game is scheduled for 5 p.m. but do to a schedule of heavy rain in the forecast the game may be rescheduled.

The Terps are coming off their first conference shellacking of the Duke Blue Devils 16-7. Senior Midfielder Mike Chanenchuk is coming off a 6-point game (4 goals, 2 assists) and junior goalkeeper Niko Amato had 9 saves in the Terps win over the Blue Devils. The Terps are led by senior midfielders Kevin Cooper and John Haus who have a combined 29 points on the season and Amato in goal with a 6.5 goals against average going into Tuesday’s matchup against UMBC.

The Retriever (1-3) are coming into Wednesday’s game feeling down about themselves, coming off of two straight blowout losses to Loyola (Md.) and most recently Fairfield. The Retriever have given up a whopping 35 goals in their last two games. The Retriever are led by senior attackman Scott Jones with 8 points on the young season. The last time the two teams met, last season on this same date, the Retriever upset the then No. 4 Terps, 8-7, by scoring five goals in the final period while holding the Terps to just one.

Both teams are looking for Baltimore bragging rights in this matchup and the edge clearly goes to the Terrapins, but that’s what the Retriever heard last season before this game and look what happened in that one.
