This will be the question that is asked all year long: Who would you take to build a new team off of Logan Schuss or Mark Matthews?
Matthews was taken first overall by the Edmonton Rush in the 2012 Entry Draft, he went on to win the 2013 Moe’s Rookie of the Year award. He finished his first season with 38 goals and 31 assists, for a total 69 points. This lead all rookies and was 15th in the league behind names like Callum Crawford, Shawn Evans, and John Grant Jr. He scored in all 16 games that he played in.
Schuss has been touted as the top rookie this season after having a stellar senior year at The Ohio State and then a great rookie run with the Ohio Machine. Schuss will be going into a rookie season with the best young group of players in the league. He will be joined by Scott Jones, Zach Palmer, Kiel Matisz, and Shayne Jackson. This will definitely help Schuss’ chances at having better numbers than Mathews did last year.
In my opinion you have to go with what you know you’ll get, so if I was starting a new team and had to pick which one I got on the team then I would take Matthews. This is because you know what you have in Matthews at the NLL level. Schuss could be the next Gait or Powell but you just don’t know what will happen in the big leagues. If I was forced to be sentimental though I would go with Schuss, an OSU grad and a Minnesota Swarm player now how could I not. But I’ll be realistic for now.
