WLA: Thunder Hope to Upset Lakers, Get Third Win

The Langley Thunder (2-3) will look to hand the Burnaby Lakers (2-0) their first loss of the 2014 Western Lacrosse Association (WLA) season at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre Friday night.

Langley will look to continue momentum from a 13-10 defeat of the Coquitlam Adanacs Wednesday, June 4.

Alex Turner (2 G, 6 A) led Thunder in the victory with eight points, while Athan Iannucci notched six points (1 G, 5 A). The pair sit first and second in the Langley points column, Turner leading the way with 23 (9 G, 14 A) while Iannucci trails closely behind with 18 (6 G, 12 A). Tom Johnson had a breakout four goal performance in the win, while James Rahe (3 G, 1 A) had four points in his season debut.

Burnaby has been inactive during June after picking up a pair of back-to-back wins, defeating the New Westminster Salmonbellies 12-11 in overtime before emerging with a 10-6 home floor win over the Nanaimo Timbermen. Jason Jones earned WLA Under Armour first star nods after posting 10 points (6 G, 4 A) in two games. Robert Church and Dane Stevens, each with three goals and four assists for seven points, have also been impressive in the Lakers limited number of games. Casey Jackson had four goals in his lone appearance versus Nanaimo.

Tyler Richards tended the twine for both of the Lakers’ early season wins, making 75 saves while allowing 17 goals against. Brodie MacDonald has carried the load in net for the Thunder, playing all but 38 minutes in five games thus far as he currently sits second behind Nanaimo’s Zack Boychuck for the league-lead in saves with 162.

Faceoff for the game is set for 7:45 pm PT.
