Virginia Outlasts Greyhounds in a Close Game

In front of a huge crowd at Loyola the Cavaliers come away with a hards fought win beating the Greyhounds 13-12. This was one that if you weren’t watching and were following along on twitter probably reminded you a lot of the first game of the season for both teams from last season that was also a nail biter. This is becoming the 1 game to make sure not to miss early in the season and I hope both teams keep it on the schedule.

First Quarter

Loyola got on the board first with goal from long stick midfielder Ryan Fournier just 7 seconds into the game. Then Virginia came back with an unassisted goal from midfielder Ryan Tucker. The scoring continued back and forth through out the first quarter. After one is was a 3-3 tie. With each team fairly even on GB’s the tale would be the turn overs. Virginia only had 1 while Loyola had 4. Face offs were pretty even with the hounds winning 4-7. Virginia did have twice as many shots as Loyola at 15-7.

Second Quarter

The second quarter started off the same as the first with Loyola getting on the board first. Senior attack man Nikko Pontrello scored unassisted. Virginia came back with a goal by Zed Williams. After winning the face off Loyola turned it over on a ground ball Picked up by VA Carlson Milikin. After each goalie making a save and clearing the ball successfully Virginia took the lead with a goal from Joe French. Again both teams traded goals back and fourth to end the half tied at 6-6. With Loyola dominating the X you would think they would be dominating the Cavs. But having double the amount of turnovers this sloppy play let Virginia stay in the game.

Third Quarter

The second half started out with Virginia taking their second lead of the game with 2 goals by Greg Coholan. Virginia would take a 4 point lead before the Greyhounds would get a goal from Zach Herreweyers. Then Loyola would make it a 2 goal game before the Cavaliers would score again to finish off the quarter with a 3 goal lead. Still dominating at the X the hounds couldn’t cash in on the opportunity.

Fourth Quarter

Going in to the final 15 mins up 11-8 the hounds scored first from Brian Sherlock. Ryan Lukacovic would answer back with his second goal of the game to keep Virginia with a 3 goal lead. Loyola would come back with 2 goals from Romar Dennis to get within 1. Virginia’s Zed Williams would get their last goal of the game. Loyola’s Zach Herrreweyers would get the last goal of the game. The Cavaliers would hold on to finish the game with the win.
