Wings Acquire Rights to Mike Thompson

Former Buffalo Bandits goaltender Mike Thompson retired after last season, but the Philadelphia Wings still traded for his rights according to NLL.com.

The Bandits traded the rights for Thompson to Philadelphia for a conditional third round pick. In related news, Buffalo GM Steve Dietrich traded a sixth round pick to the Toronto Rock for the rights to himself.

On paper that might seem crazy, but the NLL has a roster freeze this Friday. The Bandits have two goaltenders, Anthony Cosmo and Kurtis Wagar. Dietrich is a retired hall of fame goalie, so this could have been a move for emergency third stringer in a worst case scenario.

For the trade with the Wings, the conditions have not been released but it could be thought that it has to do if Thompson actually plays, which is unlikely. The Wings have goaltenders Brandon Miller and Kevin Croswell on their roster as of now and Chris Collins on their practice roster.
