WLA League Leaders: Small Makes Come Back

Following the third weekend of Western Lacrosse Association 2014 action, a select number of players stand out amongst the rest of the league:

Corey Small—Victoria Shamrocks

After three weeks, Small leads the league with 19 points that stem from 11 goals and eight assists. He’s already found 41 shot opportunities and has a .27 shooting percentage heading into the bulk of the season. This past weekend in the Shamrocks bout against the Adanacs, Small started his team’s scoring for the day, as well as the game’s.

Creighton Reid—Maple Ridge Burrards

I always enjoy when defenders find those rare opportunities for them to show a goalie what they’ve got! Creighton Reid currently leads the WLA list of defenders for scoring this season with four points! Those come from two goals AND two assists. This is the definition of a “utility player” or someone who can play anywhere anytime. Reid plays phenomenal defense and is not only able to strip the ball away but also capitalize on his own efforts!

3)   Carson Michaud—Maple Ridge Burrards

Michaud currently leads the league with a save percentage of .878, which is quite darned good! He’s played 66:37 minutes, with is less than half that of the goalies who start more but therefore suffer more. However, Michaud leads the league statistically.

4)   Zach Boychuk—Nanaimo Timberman

Leading the goalies in playing time is Boychuk, having played over 300 minutes already this season. However, his save percentage suffers from the fact he’s faced more shots, which is .795. I would like to argue that he is the better goalie when looking at performance. He’s played more than triple the amount of time as Michaud, and is within 10 percent.
