WLA: Shamrocks, Burrards, Timbermen Get Wins

This past weekend there were three games on the WLA schedule. The first was on Friday night as the Victoria Shamrocks and Nanaimo Timbermen faced off in a rematch from earlier in the week when the two teams tied 13-13.

Victoria Shamrocks (0-0-1) vs. Nanaimo Timbermen (0-1-1)

The Shamrocks would come out running against the Timbermen on Friday night as George Westwood scored just 22 seconds into the game. The Shamrocks would push their early advantage as they scored three more goals and found themselves quickly ahead 4-0.

The Timbermen would begin to fight back as Paul Brebber scored to get Nanaimo on the board. The Shamrocks would have the answer for every comeback attempt the Timbermen made in the first. As the first period ended the Shamrocks led 7-3. The second period started similar to the first as Victoria scored four straight goals to push their lead to 11-3. The Timbermen would get two goals back in the period but Corey Small would stop their momentum with a goal of his own for the Shamrocks as the Shamrocks led 12-5 at the end of two periods of play.

The Timbermen would get off to a good start in the third period as they scored two goals to make the score 12-7 and seemed on the verge of another third period comeback. The Shamrocks would douse the Timbermen comeback with four unanswered goals as they walked away with 15-7 win for their first win of the season.

Langley Thunder (0-2) vs. Maple Ridge Burrards (1-0)

In the second game of the weekend the winless Langley Thunder visited the Maple Ridge Burrards. Langley would open the scoring in the first period when Tyler Melnyk scored for the Thunder.

The Burrards would dominate the rest of the first period as they scored seven unanswered goals to take a 7-1 lead in the game. In the second period the Thunder would once again strike first as they made the score 7-2. The Burrards would control the rest of the period as the Burrards scored five unanswered goals including a Riley Loewen hat trick in the period. The Burrards led 12-2 after two periods of play.

In the third period the Burrards sealed their victory as they outscored the Thunder 3-1 in the period and held on for the 15-3 win. With the win the Burrards are the only team with two wins in the WLA so far this season and sit first in the league.

Coquitlam Adanacs (1-0) vs. Nanaimo Timbermen (0-2-1)

The Timbermen would open the scoring in this game three minutes into the first as Mac Johnson scored. The Adancs would tie the game on a goal from Kyle Dobbie in the period. The story of the first however was Zach Boychuk as he made 20 saves in the first period and kept Coquitlam to just one goal.

The Adanacs would strike first in the second period as Ryan Keith scored to put Coquitlam in front 2-1. Nanaimo would take control as Paul Brebber scored one of five unanswered goals in the period for Nanaimo as they took a 6-2 lead. Coquitlam would battle back as the period was coming to a close as Jesse Guerin scored followed by two shorthanded goals from Brett Hickey cutting the lead to one and making the score 6-5 at the end of two periods of play. In the third period Jamie Sorenson would score to extend Nanaimo’s lead to two as they led 7-5.

The Adanacs would quickly tie the game as Brett Hickey scored followed by a shorthanded goal from Brian Gillis to tie the game at 7-7. The Timbermen were not going to be denied as Jamie Sorensen would score to put Nanaimo in front 8-7 and with a minute left in the game Doug Langlois would scored to seal the 9-7 victory for the Timbermen.  With the win the Timbermen moved into third place in the WLA.
