MLL Power Rankings: Week Nine

June 1, 2015

There is a tendency in sports to over-react to any sign of weakness in a team’s performance. In most cases it’s important to avoid knee-jerk reaction or evaluations because a team can have a bad day or a bad game, heck, even a bad quarter at any time and any one of those situations could deep six their efforts for the day. The middle of the pack in MLL seems…

Simmons: 2016 Tewaaraton Winner Is…?

June 1, 2015

Lyle Thompson took home the 2016 Tewaaraton Trophy for the second year in a row. Only one other player, Mikey Powell of Syracuse, has won the trophy twice. Lyle has had an amazing career at Albany. Lyle compiled 175 goals, 225 assists, and 300 points. His 2014 and 2015 seasons rank first and second respectively in most points in a season in NCAA history, and his 77 assists in 2014…

NCAA Championships: The Best Weekend of the Year

May 30, 2015

The NCAA Championship Weekend is my favorite weekend of the year.  I have gone every year since 2007, only missing 2008 and 2011 in that span.  Even in those years, I did go see the quarterfinals the week before.  The reasons why I enjoy this event are numerous, but they were all confirmed once again this year.  Here’s a little run down of the weekend and why I keep coming…

McDaniels: In MLL, Rich Get Richer

May 28, 2015

Last week, we talked about the rookies we thought would make an impact in their Major League Lacrosse debuts. It was an impressive showing for the Class of 2015 so far. Joey Sankey dropped five goals and three assists for the Hounds. This was one of the most impressive debuts in league history albeit in a losing effort. The Hounds other young guns Josh Hawkins and Mike Sawyer will help…

2015 NLL Season Recap: Calgary Roughnecks

May 27, 2015

Back in 2002, the Calgary Roughnecks began their franchise history by setting an NLL record. For goals against. The Montreal Express, another expansion team that year, scored 32 goals in the rout. On the upside, the Roughnecks managed to iron the kinks out pretty quickly after that and went on to win their third game. They would go on to an unimpressive 4-14 record in their inaugural year, but since…

MLL Power Rankings: Week Eight

May 27, 2015

Ok, in terms of full disclosure, for last week’s rankings I put much more thought into teams’ Mallrats equivalents than the actual order of the teams. Looking back, however, I’m comfortable with where everyone was slotted. The obvious caveat to that last statement is that comfort is a relative term with the teams in this league. As one of the play-by-play guys said this weekend (I can’t remember which) the…

Baker: Outlaws Move to Second, Thompsons Debut

May 26, 2015

In the most lop sided week of the season, New York finally met someone that could not beat them and the Rattlers are tied for third place without playing a game.  Welcome to the craziness of the MLL as teams change their rosters and welcome their draft picks from college and almost all of the indoor players.  This transition helped the Denver Outlaws as they returned their line up from…

Simmons: How Maryland and Denver Arrived Here

May 25, 2015

Preseason Poll This has been an incredible year of lacrosse. For me, it is always interesting to look back at the start of the year and compare the results. I started looking back at the polls throughout the year and compare them to the end results. For simplicity’s sake, let’s just look at the Media Poll and leave the USILA Coaches poll out of the conversation. The preseason poll looked…

Rushing Out: Are the Rush As Good As Gone?

May 21, 2015

Last Friday night the Edmonton Rush fans were on a tremendous high. Their beloved team just finished beating the Calgary Roughnecks 10-8 to take a lead in the Western Division Finals. Today it’s like someone punched them in the stomach and left them feeling nauseous. Rush fans woke up this morning to the news that their team may be leaving town. Now they have heard this threat before, but this…

With the Final Four set this weekend, all but a few college players are eligible to sign Major League Lacrosse contracts.Lyle Thompson may the most talked about incoming rookie this year, but there are many others you should know before they touch the orange ball this weekend. Let’s start with Florida’s Connor Buczek. He was the second overall selection out…
