MLL: Action filled weekend produces standings log-jam

May 19, 2017

During a time when the NCAA tournament dominates the lacrosse landscape, Major League Lacrosse again continued to play some high-level and entertaining lacrosse. The Charlotte Hounds secured their first win of the season and showed flashes of the team they will become. At this point, the league is showing some separation with Denver alone in first place while Ohio, Chesapeake and New York are now 2-1 and tied for second…

MLL: New stars emerge for league in week 3

May 12, 2017

I went into the third week of Major League Lacrosse with some serious doubts. There was no way that the league could keep up the level of play and close games from their first two weeks, right? Wrong! Overtime and comebacks again dominated the weekend as well as superstar performances. Rochester took Ohio to the wire and won in overtime to hand the Machine their first defeat of the season….

MLL: Week two hijinks

May 5, 2017

The second week of Major League Lacrosse proved just as exciting and unpredictable as week one because many teams are still missing core players due to indoor or coaching commitments. This overlap makes the first four weeks of the league’s season important as no team wants to start 0-4 and battle uphill. Wiley veterans or players relatively new to the league use this opportunity to display their skills while many…

Ric Beardsley: Making defense great again

May 4, 2017

Ric Beardsley, legendary Syracuse defenseman and current coach, was one of the best to ever play at his position. A four-time All-American, he was known for his ability to throw devastating checks, make incredible passes and shut-down stellar attackmen. He was a player kids tried to emulate. During Beardsley’s playing days, collegiate teams like Syracuse, Hopkins, UVA and Maryland benefitted from national exposure. Watching their defensemen provided a wealth of…

MLL opening weekend steals the show

April 27, 2017

Major League Lacrosse kicked off the 2017 season amid the drama of NHL and NBA playoffs and the hype of early season MLB play and simply stole the show. Incredibly, all four opening weekend games ended in one-goal victories and two of the four went to overtime. Earlier in the year, commissioner David Gross announced that this would be his last season as the head of the league. Despite the…

2016 MLL Championship: Outlaws Face Machine

August 20, 2016

After one of the closest seasons in Major League Lacrosse history, the Ohio Machine are taking on the Denver Outlaws for the Steinfeld Trophy. What makes this past season stand out is that seven of nine teams ended up tied for first place. The MLL usually gets an idea of who is going to have a successful season after the fourth week of the season and the separation occurs at…

Launch Seek Second Win, Host Hounds

June 17, 2016

Spending a week in a car with your friend driving across the state of Florida is something many people find themselves doing at some point in their life.  Working while you do it is rare, but not unlikely.  To do that and then play one of the most competitive and athletic sports in American against each other is astounding.  Face Off Academy coaches Chris Mattes and Brendan Fowler and not…

Rodgers Sparks Machine in Overtime Rematch Against Outlaws

May 10, 2016

The Ohio Machine defeated the Denver Outlaws 14-13 this past weekend on the strength of 3 critical saves by Scott Rodgers during overtime.  Denver defeated visiting Ohio two weeks ago in the last minutes of that game so the Machine returned the favor in the rematch.  This time it was Marcus Holman scoring the game winning goal on an assist from Steele Stanwick.  This season’s games between Denver and Ohio…

Outlaws Derail Machine and Claim Win in Home Opener

May 4, 2016

The Ohio Machine traveled to Denver to Sports Authority Field at Mile High to take on the Outlaws in their season opener.  This was a tale of two teams that went in different directions last season.  The Machine appeared to be the favorites against the home team as Denver suffered an uncharacteristic 2015 where they failed to make the playoffs.  Jesse Schwartzman announced his retirement, the defense struggled with consistency…
