Simmons: 2016 Tewaaraton Winner Is…?

June 1, 2015

Lyle Thompson took home the 2016 Tewaaraton Trophy for the second year in a row. Only one other player, Mikey Powell of Syracuse, has won the trophy twice. Lyle has had an amazing career at Albany. Lyle compiled 175 goals, 225 assists, and 300 points. His 2014 and 2015 seasons rank first and second respectively in most points in a season in NCAA history, and his 77 assists in 2014…

Simmons: How Maryland and Denver Arrived Here

May 25, 2015

Preseason Poll This has been an incredible year of lacrosse. For me, it is always interesting to look back at the start of the year and compare the results. I started looking back at the polls throughout the year and compare them to the end results. For simplicity’s sake, let’s just look at the Media Poll and leave the USILA Coaches poll out of the conversation. The preseason poll looked…

Simmons: Syracuse Done, So What Now?

May 19, 2015

Well the final four is set. We have Notre Dame vs. Denver and Johns Hopkins vs. Maryland. I have to say, I am very surprised that Maryland won, but I’m more surprised at how it won. I did not expect that the Carolina offense would struggle so badly; it was never really close at all. I expected the UNC attack to run all over Maryland and outscore the Terps significantly,…

Johns Hopkins Stuns Syracuse to Advance to Final Four

May 17, 2015

For just the fourth time ever, the Syracuse Orange were taken down in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. The story of the day for Hopkins was graduate student Eric Schneider. Schneider picked up 15 saves and has been on a recent “redemption tour” after getting torched several times early in the season. At certain points it looked like nothing would be getting past him as he made some phenomenal…

Simmons: Albany, Maryland, Notre Dame Prove Themselves

May 11, 2015

What an excellent weekend. While there were a lot of great moments including a nice hidden ball trick goal from Hopkins, for me, the best had to have been watching Albany’s Blaze Riorden make a very nice save before trucking down the field and putting away a goal. Although I picked Albany to win, I did not expect the Great Danes’ defense to show up like it did. If the…

NCAA Playoffs: Virginia vs Johns Hopkins

May 7, 2015

The 10-4 Virginia Cavaliers and the 9-6 Johns Hopkins Blue Jays will face off in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Just think, a few weeks ago Hopkins sat at 4-6 and was a long shot to make the Tourney, but after rattling off five straight wins and gaining the Big Ten AQ, here we are. For me this game comes down to the Hopkins defense versus the Cavalier…

Simmons: Tournament Time Has Arrived

May 4, 2015

Tournament time is finally here! For a field that appeared like it would be pretty straight forward, this bracket has some surprises. First off, Notre Dame took the No. 1 overall seed, edging out Syracuse which received the No. 2 seed. Syracuse has the number one RPI and the number one strength of schedule. Furthermore, Syracuse has more top five and top ten wins. While the Irish did not win…

Simmons: Figuring Out the AQs

April 20, 2015

Tournament time is quickly approaching folks. Let me give you a quick run down of who I have in and which teams will fall short. There are some big assumptions with the conference champions, but assuming every current, conference leader goes on to win its league. These are my projected AQ teams: ACC: Notre Dame; AmEast: Albany; Big East: Denver; Big Ten: Maryland; Colonial: Towson; Ivy: Princeton; MAAC: Marist; NEC:…

Simmons: ACC Picture Clearer

April 13, 2015

The ACC picture became a little bit clearer this weekend. How about UNC? I thought Syracuse played horribly. The attack never really got its passing game to be consistent, although we saw some flashes. Randy Staats looked a little rusty and he and Dylan Donahue missed the cage from point blank several times in the first half. and Bobby Wardwell had a very challenging first half in net before being…
